PLANT MANAGEMENT
To Reduce our purchase of new plants:
- We use perennials in our planting schemes and wild-flower areas, as far as possible
- We propagate - taking cuttings and growing them on.
- We only purchase and use good quality ‘peat free’ compost where necessary.
- We collect seed from year to year, germinate and grow on our own plants.
- We protect vulnerable plants over the winter in poly-tunnels and greenhouses
- Where possible we over-winter plants in situ to avoid unnecessary expense and labour
We Re-use plants by:
- Recycling bulbs and plants for re-use in different locations:
WASTE MANAGEMENT
We Recycle by:
- Composting appropriate waste material in the compost area in the recreation ground, and taking other waste to the local Recycling Centre
- Returning plant-pots and trays to the suppliers or the recycling centre.
- Using reconditioned compost either donated or bought locally; if we buy, we buy peat-free.
- Re-using spent compost as mulch.
- Using brown bins where available
WATER USE
We Reduce our demand for treated water by:
- Using water storage such as butts, which are located on the Town Square, at the Community Garden, Museum and elsewhere.
- planting drought-tolerant species, where possible
- using baskets and containers with reservoirs.
CARING FOR WILDLIFE/WORKING WITH NATURE
Our planting is designed so that:
- We encourage and attract all sorts of pollinating insects including bees
- We encourage wild-flower planting in public spaces and elsewhere
- We encourage all forms of wildlife, by providing appropriate homes and habitats.
- Chemicals, and limit our use of plastics and pollutants, to protect water courses, insects and wild-life which are essential to horticulture. Bees are particularly under threat from these and other modern agricultural practices.
